Geologic Hydrogen:
the clean energy the Earth produces on its own

Geologic hydrogen — also called natural hydrogen, white hydrogen, or native hydrogen — is H₂ gas produced spontaneously in the Earth's crust through chemical reactions between water and iron-rich rocks. No electricity. No electrolyser. No fossil feedstock.

How the Earth produces
geologic hydrogen continuously
geological rock formation serpentinisation iron-rich peridotite natural hydrogen formation process

Geologic hydrogen is produced by geochemical processes that have been running continuously for millions of years in the Earth's crust. Unlike industrial hydrogen — which requires electricity to split water — geologic hydrogen forms spontaneously and can accumulate in geological reservoirs, just like natural gas or oil.

Its fundamental characteristic: the reactions that produce it never stop. A geologic hydrogen well recharges continuously, unlike a fossil hydrocarbon deposit that depletes permanently.

The term "geological" (or "geologic") is the scientifically precise designation. "White", "gold", "native" and "natural" are complementary names used in different industrial and scientific contexts.

🪨
Mechanism 1 — Primary
Serpentinisation
Iron-rich rocks (peridotite, dunite) react with groundwater at 200–400°C at depth. Iron (Fe²⁺) oxidises to magnetite (Fe₃O₄), releasing hydrogen atoms that combine to form H₂. Continuous reaction. Main mechanism in Lorraine and the Belgian Hercynian basement.
☢️
Mechanism 2 — Complementary
Radiolysis
Natural radioactivity in deep granites (uranium, thorium, potassium-40) splits groundwater molecules, releasing H₂. Operating in Precambrian rocks for billions of years. Confirmed in Canada (PNAS, May 2026) and the Canadian Shield.
🌋
Mechanism 3 — Localised
Deep Degassing
Primordial H₂ escapes directly from the Earth's mantle through deep fault zones. Observed in Albania (Bulqizë mine, Jurassic ophiolite): 200 t/yr of H₂ at 84% purity measured — the largest natural hydrogen flux ever quantified (Truche et al., Science, Feb. 2024).

The REGALOR II programme, led by FDE with CNRS geochemists Jacques Pironon and Philippe De Donato (University of Lorraine), drilled PTH-2 at Pontpierre, Moselle, to 3,655 metres — the world's deepest well dedicated exclusively to natural hydrogen exploration.

Results announced on 23 June 2026: 36.1% H₂ at 2,242m and 49.6% H₂ at 2,426m — among the highest natural hydrogen concentrations ever measured in situ globally. The deposit is estimated at 92 million tonnes.

FDE targets independent resource certification in 2027 and first commercial production in late 2028.

We are no longer discussing a scientific hypothesis. We are progressively de-risking what could become one of Europe's first industrial-scale natural hydrogen projects.

geologischen Wasserstoff produziert
geologisches Gestein Serpentinisierung eisenreiches Peridotit natürlicher Wasserstoff Bildungsmechanismus

Radiolyse
Natürliche Radioaktivität in tiefen Graniten (Uran, Thorium) spaltet Grundwassermoleküle und setzt H₂ frei. Bestätigt in Kanada (PNAS, Mai 2026) im präkambrischen Schild.

Tiefes Entgasen
